As I begin to form my piece on Bedarra, I find my mouse hovering over the booking page once more, wondering just how long I should wait before rebooking. It’s not just me. Many guests have standing bi- or tri-yearly stays locked in, drawn back to this secluded paradise like moths to a flame. For some, it’s an escape from the ceaseless buzz of their lives; for others, it’s an intentional pause, a way to consciously reconnect outside the mundane.

Bedarra Island is Australia’s answer to the Maldives — barefoot luxury in its purest form, where world-class service blends effortlessly with an unpretentious, laid-back atmosphere. This is a place where luxury means feeling at ease, where everything you need seems to appear before you even know you want it, delivered with an authentic warmth.

Couples come here one-on-one or in small groups. Young honeymooners laze by the pool, a fresh margarita placed gently beside them, the sound of the ocean filling the space between them.

“Some snacks, perhaps?” offered one of the couples I sat with after treating myself to an afternoon swim in the crystal-clear waters just off our private beach. Within moments, a chilled bottle of French Champagne and a curated cheese platter materialised in front of us, no request too much.

The staff knew — thanks to my booking notes — not to include dried apple, an allergy I had noted weeks earlier. That’s Bedarra’s magic: every detail accounted for, no request too small, no indulgence too grand.

Afterward, I returned to my villa to find a cold bottle of champagne waiting in an ice bucket on the coffee table. The deck, with its postcard-perfect view, beckoned me outside. Below, the sea sparkled under the fading afternoon sun, and with the fully stocked (and included) mini-bar at my disposal, I let the island’s unhurried pace wash over me with some chocolate and champagne.

Last year, I was lucky enough to visit the Maldives, and while the pristine beaches and iconic overwater bungalows are something to behold, there is something undeniably special about Bedarra. It’s not just the beauty of the island, but the way it lodges itself into your memory, resurfacing every time someone asks, “Where’s the best place you’ve ever travelled?”

As evening approached, I headed to the main pavilion for drinks, where the choice was mine: socialise with other guests or retreat to one of the cosy nooks for a quiet conversation. The couples I met, warm and welcoming, were living proof of Bedarra’s appeal—most were return visitors, seasoned advocates of the island’s charm. And it was easy to see why.

The beaches, untouched and isolated, were the highlight of the stay. Each one felt like a private slice of paradise. “If a tinny’s parked on the shore, that means someone’s already claimed it,” one of the guests joked as we explored the coastline. There’s a simplicity to the way Bedarra works—you take things as they come, enjoying the space and serenity as it unfolds.

In the morning, as I sat down to a leisurely breakfast, our waiter asked if I’d like a picnic packed for later. Perhaps I’d like to find my own beach to soak up the sun? There was no rush, no strict schedule to adhere to—just the promise of another perfect day, filled with all the thoughtful luxuries that Bedarra is known for.

Bedarra Island isn’t just a place you visit; it’s a place you remember, over and over again. The barefoot luxury, the seamless service, and the unrivalled privacy all combine to create a destination that stands in a league of its own—an Australian gem with a global allure.
