In the popularity stakes, the SUV car shape seems to be winning, as more drivers fall in love with elevated sightlines and extra space for beach trips and family adventures. The white-hot centre of this trend is small and midsize SUVs, which blend sport capability with inner-city appeal.
The love affair is set to intensify with the GV70, a medium SUV by the award-winning South Korean newcomer Genesis. You might have already spotted its siblings, the G70 and G80 sedans and the GV80 large SUV, which launched in late 2020. The GV70 has the same design spirit of “athletic elegance”, with sleek lines and a soft, refined interior, but it’s tailored to the needs of family life.
Australians, in particular, are avid fans of the SUV, according to Connal Yan, the Genesis country manager for Australia. “The Australian market has been shifting heavily towards SUVs, with the small and medium size SUV segments being the fastest growing. In fact, we took over 100 pre-orders from customers before they even got to see and experience the GV70 in person.”
The most exciting growth segment for the brand is female decision-makers. “With its stylish, modern design and connection to the lifestyle side of our brand, we are expecting the GV70 to be popular among female buyers,” says Yan.

Another Genesis signature is of-the-moment technology, and the GV70 is enviably outfitted, from a head-up display with augmented reality navigation to remote smart parking assist, wireless phone charging and heated and ventilated seats. It also aims to set a new benchmark for safety, with blind spot collision avoidance and lane-keep assist, a 360-degree camera view on its touchscreen and an applied brake system for reversing into tight spots. “I love everything about the GV70,” says Yan. “Once customers drive it they will be able to truly appreciate what the Genesis experience is all about.”
The brand’s most audacious, progressive move is the reimagining of the dealership. Genesis Studios are minimalist spaces that share more DNA with a contemporary art gallery, set among luxury boutiques in fashionable CBD locations. A Sydney flagship on Pitt Street debuted in 2019, joined by Emporium Melbourne this past July, while Brisbane’s opens next year. Or stay at home, browsing GV70’s options, engine types and colours at the e-boutique and have Genesis come to you. A fixed-price model means everyone pays the same (the GV70 starts at $66,400 plus on-road costs) and everyone gets the same luxury ownership experience, including the Genesis-To-You concierge service.
Says Yan: “We expect sustainable growth for years to come as we roll out more models, including three electric vehicles next year, to penetrate the Australian auto market, starting with the recent GV70 medium SUV and updated G70 sports sedan launches.”
