In a fusion of contemporary art and precision watchmaking, Zenith and the acclaimed Argentine-Spanish artist Felipe Pantone have unveiled their latest masterpiece: the Defy Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone. The limited-edition watch, available in just 100 pieces from September 12, marks the pair’s third collaborative series.

Zenith and Pantone joined forces in 2020 when Pantone designed a unique tarpaulin for the Manufacture’s façade. Since then, they have introduced several notable projects: the Defy 21 limited edition series, which sold out instantly in 2021; a one-of-a-kind Defy 21 Double Tourbillon in a sapphire case, which broke records for Zenith at the the OnlyWatch 2021 charity auction; and a much-anticipated sequel in 2022 with the Defy Extreme Felipe Pantone.

Pantone’s approach to the latest collaboration reveals his deep understanding of the intersection of art and horology. He’s known for creating visually impactful experiences through experimenting with colour and materials.

“When adapting this process [to watches, I have] to consider the precision and constraints inherent in horology,” Pantone tells T Australia.  “This means scaling down the grandeur of my usual art installations to something that fits on a watch dial.”

As well as maintaining the vibrant essence of his artistic style — which stems from Pantone’s graffiti-inspired artistic roots — the Defy Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone is a complex yet minimalist creation. It features intricate details such as gradient indexes and hands, a mirror ‘Planned Iridescence’ dial, and a distinctive bolt-shaped tourbillon.

Crafted in a 41mm octagonal stainless-steel case, the timepiece boasts a geometric and angular silhouette. With its alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes, and an easily interchangeable steel bracelet along with a black rubber strap, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon is designed for both visual impact and ergonomic comfort.

Pantone describes his work as a dialogue between the past and the future, merging digital aesthetics with traditional techniques. “My aim is to encapsulate the speed of our digital era while maintaining a tangible, physical presence that engages viewers beyond a screen,” he says.

This vision is brought to life through the Defy Skyline Tourbillon, where the iridescent dial and micro-engraved pattern create a visual effect reminiscent of Pantone’s signature moiré patterns. The tourbillon’s bridge, shaped like a lightning bolt and finished in a gradient of metallic rainbow tones, further highlights Pantone’s unique style.

The watch is presented in a custom box adorned with an iridescent pattern on both the interior and exterior, providing a final homage to Pantone’s distinctive artistry.
